The Bill Hicks experience

I was chatting (read ‘ranting’) with a few folks yesterday about media gatekeeping and the selective promotion of people who appear to speak for the everyman but who in practice do an excellent job of preventing and neutralising dissent.

There is a lot of it about these days.

Mid-rant I stopped and asked myself which, if any, public figure I believe presents a genuinely challenging view of the world that doesn’t fall into line with some carefully crafted, corporatist agenda.

That was a toughie.

There really is a dearth of politicians, journalists, writers or comedians who come anywhere near to scaring the establishment.

I can’t recall the last time I heard, saw, or read anything in the mainstream that left me thinking ‘fuck me that bloke really is angry, how on earth did he make it onto television?’

And then I thought about Bill Hicks

He was definitely angry about something. Quite a few things actually

Hicks is by no means an ideal role model for small children and he is also somewhat restricted in his ability to challenge the powers that be by the fact that he’s been dead for years

But it’s interesting to compare that clip of Chomsky blowing off 9/11 and JFK conspiracy theories with this little skit by Hicks on the JFK thing

'Back, and to the Left...'

… and then asking yourself which of the two men represented more of a threat to The Machine.

Or about comparing this clip of Hicks commenting on the Invasion of Iraq and the War on Terror ten years before they even got going and the video of John Stewart interviewing Bill Kristol

… and then asking yourself if John Stewart is even worthy of wiping Bill Hicks’ long dead arse

And whilst I’m linking to Bill Hicks clips…

'Go see Madonna ... you drunk c*nt!!!'

'Kanpai!'

Everyman? An average everyman is just another shill. He just doesn't know he is.

To quote Hollywood shills^H^H^H^H actors selling me another illusion:
"The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it."

Who are these 'gatekeepers', and why don't they have the good taste to slam the gate shut in Peter Andre and Jordan's faces?

(Yo! H.N.Y. to ya btw)
At "That was a toughie", the only eemya that sprang to rassoodock was Mark Thomas. And even though I've viddy'd neither hide nor luscious glory of the bolshy chelloveck for a long raz, it becomes clear that all we may be left with in the way of dynamic entities that 'speak to power' may be imaginary or folkloric media personas; which frankly, is not enough basic mass. This year, more than any other may just exponentially suck a**.

Just wanted to let you know, that I found a blog that might be interesting to you:

I still don't know enough about British politics to know were this guy stands, but at first glance it seems not so far from your point.

@t-mix

thank you, yes it is

and as for British politics there's not much to learn - keep everyone blinded with bullshit whilst running business as usual

@rahid

sadly, I suspect that you may be correct...

You could like this: Censoring Bill Hicks
But they censored the f-word, which makes it almost unwatchable from time to time...
