Crunchy TV

And what a Crunchy night of prime time television it was in the UK yesterday

BBC1 8.30pm - Panorama: How Safe is my Money?
ITV1 8.00pm - Crunch Time: Tonight
C4 8.00pm - Dispatches: The Human Cost of the Credit Crunch
C4 9.00pm - The Price of Property

It would be fair to say that the debt-laden masses are now been given official establishment permission, nay, encouragement to crap themselves royally

The Golden Rule when consuming all mass media coverage of economics is, of course, to remember that it is always wrong; either factually or in its timing, or both

which means, given the universally bleak tone of last night's Crunchy TV, that either

a) the economy is about to boom

b) the situation is even worse than portrayed and we're facing The Apocalypse

-

As well as answering the question of 'How Safe is my Money?' yesterday, the BBC also tackled the important question of the rising number of fake £1 coins in circulation. Estimates of the number of fake coins are as high as a potentially economy-crippling £30m - something like, say, 0.05% of the money spunked on Northern Rock

The BBC website provides a clear explanation of how to identify fake coins which every concerned citizen is advised to read - after all none of us want to be caught holding currency that isn't worth the paper, or metal, it's printed on

One of these coins is a cheap, shitty knock off with no inherent value - the other's a fake

.

The whole fake £1 coin humbug is very amusing, because of course in a fiat currency most of your money is counterfeited.

just because someone is a blood-sucking evil overlord is doesn't mean that they can't have a sense of humour

quite the opposite actually

Reminds me of a funny story I heard years ago when the quid coins first came out. Our local royal mint coined these and some of the workforce found a nifty way to steal them. They'd fill their pockets and go for their fag break in a camera blind-spot, then throw their coins as far as they could over the fence. Then at night, they'd return and grapple in the dark for their booty. I don't know how long they got away with it, but was it not for the land owner repairing his fence and noticing lots of coins lying about, they'd have been still going for it!

-That, my friend, is Welsh money!
-They don't have any Welsh money!
-No wonder they all vote Labour.

Curious as to the Welsh statements...
They don't have Welsh money?
No wonder they all vote labour?

Rather blanket statements don't you think?

@edo

Sorry that was an obscure Bottom reference. You know that episode when Eddie Hitler makes fake notes? No? Err...

Anyway I have nothing against Wales, or Bridgend, although Stef recently brought some frightening facts to my attention.

Dear American:

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

Yours Faithfully,
Minister of Treasury Paulson

sounds like Bush is making a threat to the good folks of the US ie cough up the 700 billion or fuck you all, we may have to possess your homes and millions will be unemployed.

Prediction. The US elections are going to get canceled due to the crisis which may last for many years,,,who knows we may even get a 911 redux just to persuade the good folks of the US that Dubya knows best.

@unanon

I do believe I just saw mention that McCain has suspended temporarily suspended campaigning due to this unfortunate, unforeseen economic apocalypse

hmmm...

Chip Shop Sue said...

McCain was also asking Obama to suspend his campaign!

With the Republicans set to lose, an election suspension blamed on the financial crisis may be the way things go.

Whatever happen....
from the FT
The US is poised to lose its role as a global financial “superpower” in the wake of the financial crisis, Peer Steinbrück, German finance minister, said on Thursday as he called for a regulatory crackdown on financial markets.

“The US will lose its status as the superpower of the world financial system. This world will become multipolar” with the emergence of stronger, better capitalised centres in Asia and Europe, Mr Steinbrück told the German parliament.

“The world will never be the same again.”
