Water

Kaikoura, NZ

I think I may have posted a very similar picture before but, right now, here in Lambeth in March this scene looks awfully appealing ...

Think again! Just offshore is a huge underwater cliff which given a decent slip could crash down causing a tsunami and resulting in aid appeals for the ‘Kaikoura tsunami’ involving appeal boxes at supermarket checkouts, clothing collection points in disused warehouses, full page ads in all newspapers telling you how you must help, hourly updates of death totals, months of various 'charity' sporting events, shots of hardened Russian tourists taking advantage of cut price whale watching trips as noble locals dig their decaying relatives from the mud and debris, emails offering to donate to the disaster if you fill in a satisfaction survey, telephone appeals which catch you just as you finally sit down for dinner, grandmothers busying themselves knitting cable ribbed cardigans with buttons down the front for the survivors.

But then again, Kaikoura is a bit of a shit hole.

Ha! But you haven't visited Lambeth lately have you?

Having said that I was only referring to the beach view and, yes, I'd be the first to admit that downtown Kaikoura is not exactly the jewel in NZ's architectural crown. The last time I walked through there I found myself thinking 'We climbed down from the trees for this?'

The Kaikoura Tsunami is news to me. Jesus, the Culture of Fear has even made it's way to there.

I read that a tornado hit Greymouth a couple of weeks ago as well - no actual destruction though, just a slight rearrangement of the town's layout.

Anyway, I doubt if you'd see all that charitable activity if the Big One hits Kaikoura - it's been done already. I'd suggest the locals come up with something new and a little bit special if they want to get into the papers. I don't know - a huge fire beathing lizard with a cute baby in tow, a massive flying turtle projecting X-beams from its eyes, something like that ...

Re. Blogger why post a comment once when you can do it twice? You were lucky at least it wasn't erased.

Altogether now - La la la la. I hate Blogger madly! I hate Blogger badly!
